Speaker meets The Executive Director of UN Women

On this Wednesday 10 May 2017, Speaker of Chamber of Deputies Right Hon. Mukabalisa Donatille hosted in her office a delegation from UN Women led by Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, The United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, during a courtesy call.

During their meeting, Madam Speaker presented the role of women in the country development especially in rebuilding Rwandan society and rebuilding themselves after 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi which left the County into ashes.

Right Hon. Mukabalisa said that during 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi women were more vulnerable and suffered a lot from killings and sexual-based violence. 

She however noted that despite all those hardships they faced during 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, women are now confident and empowered in all life sectors through the Government political will of empowering them and enhance their participation in country’s development.

Speaking to the media after this meeting, The Head of UN women delegation Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, acknowledged Rwandan women for their integration and development which is internationally recognised.

Rwanda showed that it is possible to have women in the majority in parliament and the law they make have positive impact on both women and on the country in general.  We appreciate the progress that Rwanda has made in making ICT and technology a priority. Rwanda is also above the global average when it comes to engaging young women in ICT and technology” she said. 

I had an opportunity to visit the women outside the capital and I saw myself how much women use mobile based system to facilitate procurement and the use of information which they gather through mobile technology so that they can  access finance, have reliable information and for market accessshe added.
