President Kagame presides over the swearing-in ceremony of new Senators

On 17 October 2019, the President of the Republic of Rwanda, H.E Paul Kagame presided over the swearing-in ceremony of 20 new Senators making the Third Senate to serve the next five-year term. During the same ceremony, other top officials took the oath of office as well.

After the Senators were sworn in, they proceeded with the election of the Bureau of the Senate whereby Hon. Dr. Iyamuremye Augustin was elected President of the Senate, while Hon. Nyirasafari Espérance and Hon. Alvera Mukabaramba were respectively elected Vice-President in charge of Parliamentary Affairs and Vice-President in charge of Finance and Administration.

In his remarks, H.E. Paul Kagame commended the outgoing members for a job well done and congratulated incoming members reminding them than they owe their election to their values, patriotism, expertise, and devotion. He urged them to make use of those potentials to improve the social welfare of the people of Rwanda.

“Transforming the lives of our citizens will require to work closely with them, to help solve the challenges they still face and advise them on how to confront those that are laying ahead of us”, he advised new members of the Senate.

The new President of the Senate, Rt. Hon. Iyamuremye Augustin speaking after the election, first of all, thanked the President of the Republic for having appointed him a Senator and promised him to tirelessly discharge responsibilities conferred on him.

“As part of our primary responsibility, we shall continue to make sure fundamental principles are well instilled in all walks of life, making use of the achievements of our predecessors as a baseline”, he vowed.

Twenty (20) Senators who were sworn in are: Senator Bideri John Bonds, Senator Dushimimana Lambert, Senator Habineza Faustin, Senator Habiyakare François, Senator Havugimana Emmanuel, Senator Iyamuremye Augustin, Senator Kanyarukiga Ephrem, Senator Mukabaramba Alvera, Senator Mupenzi George, Senator Murangwa N. Hadidja, Senator Mureshyankwano Marie Rose, Senator Niyomugabo Cyprien, Senator Nkurunziza Innocent, Senator Nkusi Juvénal, Senator Nsengimana Fulgence, Senator Ntidendereza William, Senator Nyinawamwiza Laëtitia, Senator Nyirasafari Espérance, Senator Umuhire Adrie and Senator Uwera Pélagie.

The above-listed Senators are joining in the House other 6 sitting members serving their last year in the Senate, namely, Senator Uyisenga Charles, Senator Uwimana Consolée, Senator Mukakalisa Jeanne D’Arc, Senator Kalimba Zephrin, Senator Karangwa Chrysologue, and Senator Nyagahura Margaret.

During the same ceremony, sworn in were Dr. Usta Kaitesi, RGB CEO; Dr. Nibishaka Emmanuel, RGB Deputy CEO and Maj. Gen. Bayingana Emmanuel, Airforce Chief of Staff.
