Speaker Mukabalisa lays wreaths and lights frame at Nyanza-Kicukiro Genocide Memorial

On April 11th, 2024, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Rt. Hon. Mukabalisa Donatille, along with government officials and families, joined the residents of Kicukiro District in commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi at the Nyanza-Kicukiro Genocide Memorial.

After a Walk to Remember that commenced from the IPRC stadium, formerly ETO Kicukiro, which served as the base of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR), Speaker Mukabalisa laid wreaths and lit the flame of remembrance in honor of the lives of over 105,000 victims. Among them, more than 2,500 were killed by the Interahamwe militia after UN peacekeepers abandoned them during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis.

In her speech, Speaker Mukabalisa emphasized that the commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi is the responsibility of every citizen and of the international community alike. She stated that it presents an opportunity to learn from history and envision a future of hope, dignity, and prosperity for our country.

“We appreciate Rwanda’s resilient journey towards development, which has resulted in numerous socio-economic achievements, thanks to the strong, compassionate, and visionary leadership that cares for every Rwandan citizen without discrimination,” she affirmed.

She further added, “We take pride in the peace and security that have been prioritized, and we extend our gratitude to the Rwanda Defence Force and the Rwanda National Police for their outstanding efforts.”

During the night vigil, survivors of the atrocities at ETO and Nyanza in Kicukiro District shared their testimonies and engaged in discussions about the historical factors that lead to the Genocide against the Tutsi, the role of the international community, and issues pertaining to justice.
