Kigali, October 13, 2025 – In a significant step toward strengthening regional cooperation and supporting the peace process between Rwanda and DRC, the Senate President of Rwanda, Kalinda François Xavier, alongside Bureau Members of both Chambers of Parliament, met with Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in a 3-day work visit to Rwanda.
This high-level meeting focused on fostering dialogue and exploring initiatives to support the implementation of the peace agreement signed between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda on June 27, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
“This is a working visit I am paying to Rwanda, and I want to express my solidarity with the Parliament of Rwanda. We do know that there are some real challenges in the region. The IPU wants to bring to the service of the Rwandan authorities our experience and knowledge in terms of parliamentary diplomacy to help and accompany processes that are underway to achieve peace in the region,” said Secretary General Martin Chungong.
The peace agreement, a landmark accord facilitated with international support, aims to address longstanding tensions and promote stability and cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. The IPU’s involvement is expected to add a valuable layer of parliamentary support and diplomatic backing to the ongoing process.
“We have just welcomed the IPU Secretary General. We are pleased he is visiting our country and showing us that they support the agreement between Rwanda and DRC and that they are ready to support it so it can fulfil its target,” stated Senate President Kalinda François Xavier.
Both parties emphasised the importance of sustained dialogue, parliamentary engagement, and collaborative oversight to ensure that the peace agreement not only holds but also translates into meaningful improvements in the lives of citizens across the region.
