The President of the Senate, François Xavier Kalinda, joined residents and local leaders in Rubavu for the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi (Kwibuka32). The event took place on 30 April 2026 at the Rubavu Genocide Memorial, commonly known as “Commune Rouge,” where the remains of 5,209 victims are laid to rest.
During the commemoration, the Senate President participated in the dignified burial of two victims whose remains were recently discovered. He also toured the memorial site, which preserves the history and testimonies reflecting the brutality of the Genocide in the former Gisenyi Prefecture.
In his remarks, President Kalinda emphasized that remembering the Genocide against the Tutsi is a responsibility shared by all Rwandans. He called on residents of Rubavu and the wider Western Province to strengthen efforts in combating genocide ideology and safeguarding national unity.
He further highlighted the ongoing threat posed by groups that continue to promote genocide ideology across the region, urging vigilance and collective responsibility to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
