On 28 May 2023, Members of Parliament and Parliamentary staff, officials, and representatives of families of former CND employees met for the 29th commemoration of the Genocide Against the Tutsi.
In his address, Senate President Rt. Hon. Dr Kalinda François-Xavier said, “We must set the firm goal, that all of us, must do everything which is in our powers and in our ability to fight and prevent the ideology of the genocide and division that characterised the politics of governance from colonial times to the first and second republics."
The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Mukabalisa Donatille pointed out that there is still the lingering ideology of the genocide here in the country, in the region, and abroad.
“We have the responsibility to face and fight against anything that can destroy our unity and what the country has achieved.” Speaker Mukabalisa said
Minister of Unity and Civic Engagement, Dr Bizimana Damascène urged Members of the Parliament to use parliamentary diplomacy to make the rest of the world understand that the genocide is an international crime that should be punished as well as its denial.
In the commemoration held by the Parliament, Members of the Parliament together with representatives of families of former CND employees honoured the following victims of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi: Gashayija Pierre Celestin, Kayiranga Celestin, Mukantembe Aloyisie and Mugenzi Jean Louis.
