In celebration of International Women’s Day, Senators and Members of Parliament embarked on a two-day nationwide outreach activity to engage with communities. Organized by the Forum of Rwandan Women Parliamentarians (FFRP), these activities aim to discuss the role of youth in national development with local leaders, visit families experiencing domestic conflicts to provide counselling and help resolve couples' differences before celebrating the International Women's Day on March 8, 2025.
The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Kazarwa Gertrude, praised the progress made in promoting gender equality but emphasized that there is still much work to be done.
"Although significant achievements have been made, and they are commendable, the journey is still long. We continue to see challenges hindering family development. Among them is the fact that not everyone has reached a satisfactory level of understanding regarding gender equality between men and women. There is still a large number of women without paid employment and a low number of women who can start their income-generating businesses."
Moreover, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies encouraged women to be more courageous and collaborate with financial institutions to access funds that could lift them and their families out of poverty.
This year’s theme aligns with the United Nations’ global message, “For Every Woman and Girl: Rights, Equality, Development,” while Rwanda’s national theme emphasizes empowerment: “Empowering Her: Building a Bright Future for Children – She is Valuable Today and Tomorrow.”
