On 16 April 2026, the Members of Parliament joined citizens in Ngororero and Rwamagana Districts to mark the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi (#Kwibuka32). The event was organized by the Parliamentary Forum against Genocide Ideology, denial, and minimization of the Genocide against the Tutsi, as part of efforts to promote truth and preserve memory.
In Ngororero, a delegation led by Senate President Kalinda François Xavier paid tribute to over 8,000 victims laid at the Nyange Genocide Memorial, where 12 bodies were also given a dignified burial. He urged anyone with information on undiscovered victims to come forward. “There is nothing more meaningful you can do for a genocide survivor than provide information about where their loved ones who were not properly laid to rest can be found. I urge anyone with such information to come forward. Those who have already done so are appreciated, and I believe that sharing such truth also brings inner peace,” he said.
In Rwamagana, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Gertrude Kazarwa, with her delegation, joined residents at Nyagasenyi Genocide Memorial, where over 887 victims are buried, and called on, especially the youth, to stand against genocide denial and the distortion of history. “We must continue to protect our society from genocide ideology in all its forms. It is essential to confront hatred and genocide denial wherever it appears—whether within our region or beyond,” she emphasized.
The commemoration activities by Parliamentarians are part of the national mourning period dedicated to remembering the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and reinforcing the values of unity, truth, and resilience among Rwandans.
