On April 21st, 2024, Members of Parliament gathered with citizens from Huye and Nyamagabe Districts to commemorate the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi. The commemorative event was organized by the Anti-Genocide Parliamentary Forum, Rwanda Chapter (AGPF-Rwanda).

A group of Senators and Deputies, led by Dr. Kalinda François Xavier, President of the Senate, visited the Karama Genocide Memorial in Huye District. They witnessed the history of the Genocide in Karama and its surroundings and attended the ceremony where five victims of the Genocide were laid to rest.

Dr. Kalinda comforted families who lost their loved ones during the Genocide against the Tutsi in Karama. He vowed that as Members of Parliament, they would never cease to join Rwandans in all programs of remembering the Genocide against the Tutsi and fighting against the ideology of genocide.

“Remembering the worst history our country has gone through aims to value life and prevent anything that would try to disrupt our choices as Rwandans or to distract our momentum towards rebuilding our unity and promoting the good leadership we have achieved,” stated Dr Kalinda François Xavier.

At the Murambi Genocide Memorial, one of the four UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Mukabalisa Donatille, together with another group of Senators and Deputies, joined the citizens of Nyamagabe in commemorating the 30th Genocide of the Tutsi in 1994. During this activity, 162 bodies were honourably buried.

The Speaker Mukabalisa Donatille recalled that it is important to value those who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and to know that before they were killed, they endured sufferings and were ridiculed in tragic manners just because of the way they were born.

The speaker urged citizens to continue fighting against evil, looking at the better future of the country that they will leave for the next generation.
