On November 11, 2024, Members of Parliament began a three-day workshop focused on Effective Parliamentary Oversight. This workshop, organized in collaboration with the Office of the Auditor General and the Canadian Audit and Accountability Foundation, aims to highlight the importance of effective oversight in strengthening the role of committees in reanalyzing performance audit reports.
In her opening remarks, the Speaker Chamber of Deputies, Rt. Hon. Gertrude Kazarwa underlined the critical role of Parliament in evaluating the use of public funds, ensuring compliance with standards and regulations, and ultimately achieving a positive impact on the living conditions of the citizens.
"Although the Public Accounts Committee is the one assigned to analyze the Auditor General’s report, we resolved that it would be more beneficial to extend the workshop to all committees since they also analyze performance audits on sectors that fall under one's responsibilities".
The High Commissioner of Canada to Rwanda, H.E. Julie Crowley highlighted the importance of strengthening performance auditing and improving parliamentary oversight. H.E. Crowley praised the partnership between Rwanda’s Office of the Auditor General and the Canadian Audit and Accountability Foundation, stressing that such collaborations are crucial for enhancing transparency and accountability in managing public resources.
Auditor General Alexis Kamuhire commended the work of parliamentary committees in holding government institutions accountable. He acknowledged that these committees are critical in scrutinizing audit reports and ensuring that public funds are used effectively. Kamuhire also noted that the workshop would offer a valuable opportunity for experience-sharing and for further strengthening the role of parliamentary committees in reviewing and acting upon audit findings.
