Both Chambers of the Parliament, The Senate, and the Chamber of Deputies began the first ordinary session of the year 2023-2024, on Thursday, 5 October 2023.

The President Senate said that the Senate indicated that during the first ordinary session of 2023-2024, the Senate will be discharging its mandate by voting laws, overseeing government activities, and monitoring the application of fundamental principles specified in Article 10 of the Constitution.

“Senators will conduct outreach activities individually or through the standing committees. The Senate will also serve in other capacities, including the approval of Officials appointments and reports of the standing committees by the Plenary Assembly.” Senate President added.

The Deputy Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Hon. Mukabagwiza Edda said that during the first ordinary session, the Chamber will consider the relevance of various bills and their vote. The draft laws which are under consideration by the Standing Committee will be tabled before the Plenary Assembly.

“As part of the responsibility to oversee the Government activities, the Plenary Assembly of the Chamber of Deputies will invite some Cabinet members to provide verbal explanations on the activities of the Government according to everyone’s responsibilities. The Chamber of Deputies will also consider the Standing Committees reports.” She added.

Article 72 of the Constitution of the Republic of Rwanda stipulated that the sitting of the Plenary Assembly of each chamber take place during the ordinary and extraordinary session. The 1st ordinary session will last two (2) months and it will be closed on 4 December 2023.
