On October 31, 2024, the Parliament of Rwanda hosted a conference in celebration of the International Day of Democracy, with a focus on the theme: “30 Years: The Achievements of Good Governance in Promoting Democracy and the Role of Technology.”
The event brought together Members of Parliament, Cabinet Members, representatives from government institutions, civil society and political parties.
In his opening speech, the President of the Senate of Rwanda, Rt. Hon. Dr. Kalinda François, stated, “We have chosen to build a system of governance that puts citizens’ needs first. Today, our democracy reflects the wishes of Rwandans who want to live in peace and feel secure for development and well-being.”
In closing, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Rt. Hon. Kazarwa Gertrude, emphasized the importance of access to technology for all citizens: “I remind Rwandans to take pride in the governance we have chosen and work towards giving every citizen the chance to access technology.”
She added that members of Parliament continually strive to ensure citizens are involved in development initiatives and have the right to voice their concerns, which strengthens the core principles of democracy.
The International Day of Democracy was established by a United Nations General Assembly resolution in 2007. It is celebrated on September 15, but Rwanda held its celebration later due to other important governance-related commitments.
