On 28 September 2023, The Parliament of Rwanda held a consultative conference to mark the celebration of the International Day of Democracy under the theme “Inclusive Democracy, the Pillar of Sustainable Development. This meeting brought together Members of the Parliament, representatives of government institutions, youth, and non-governmental bodies.
In his remarks, the President of the Senate of Rwanda, Rt. Hon. Dr Kalinda François said that in Rwanda all institutions including government and non-government bodies have the responsibility to respect the principles of democracy.
“Through the celebrating of this day, we also look back and celebrate the significant progress made by our country in strengthening inclusive democracy after the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994, and in establishing the policy against any form of discrimination." He added.
The presentations made by Minister of Local Government, Hon. Jean Claude Musabyimana and other guests focused on the participation of the population in solving the problems they face and strengthening inclusive democracy with a particular focus on youth, people with disabilities and non-governmental organizations.
The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Rt. Hon. Mukabalisa Donatille said, “The Parliament will continue to promote the inclusive democracy in Rwanda, we heard and valued the challenges mentioned by each group during the discussions. The Parliament, by the responsibility entrusted to us by law, will always strive for inclusiveness in the involvement of all citizens in the development programs.” She noted.
The International Day of Democracy is celebrated around the world every year on 15 September. It was established through a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 2007, encouraging governments to strengthen and consolidate democracy.
