On 13 April 2023, Rwanda marked the end of the commemoration week during which on the national level, the President of the Senate, Dr Kalinda François-Xavier, government officials, dignitaries, families, and friends gathered at Rebero Genocide Memorial to pay respect to politicians who were killed because of their opinions, in which they stood against Genocide ideology. They also laid wreaths at the resting place of politicians and more than 14,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The President of the Senate Right Hon. Kalinda François Xavier urged citizens to stand and work together to fight against Genocide ideology.
"The politicians who were killed because of their stand against the politics of discrimination and division and Genocide ideology shall always be remembered for setting a good example by dissociating themselves with evil & speaking out against injustice" Senate President Kalinda.
"All of us, young or adults, must work together to fight against the Genocide ideology that is propagated through the internet and social media”, President of the Senate Kalinda.
"It is important that we always remember our country's tragic history. We must never forget the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi to preserve our unity and stand together against the Genocide Ideology." President of the Senate Kalinda.
The President of the Senate said that the “remember-unite-renew” theme should send a warning message to those who attempt to bring back politics of the hatred and the Genocide ideology, that Rwandans will never tolerate them, and that they will be defeated.
Commemoration week was closed but activities of remembrance of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi will continue for 100 days.
