Rwanda has received the 2025 Women Political Leaders (WPL) Country Award for its leadership in advancing women’s political participation and representation. The award was presented during the WPL Summit 2025, held on 29 September in Montenegro.

Women now hold 63.75% of Rwanda’s parliamentary seats, affirming Rwanda’s continued leadership in women’s political representation. This achievement demonstrates the country’s commitment to inclusive governance, gender equality, and sustainable development.

Senator Espérance Nyirasafari, who received the award on behalf of the people of Rwanda, emphasized that the recognition is a tribute to the resilience of Rwandan women who have embraced leadership at all levels of society. She also called for further efforts to deepen inclusion and transform lives through women’s political participation.

The award highlights how Rwanda has rebuilt after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, recognizing that gender equality provides not only rights but also a foundation for peace and sustainable development.

Rwanda remains committed to working with international partners to advance women’s leadership and political empowerment worldwide.
