The Parliament of Rwanda welcomed delegations from across Africa and international institutions from 1-5 September for exchanges focused on advancing gender equality, promoting inclusive governance, and sustaining peace.

The Parliament hosted a legislative delegation from Liberia, a delegation from UN Women of the United Republic of Tanzania, and Members of the Special Criminal Court of the Central African Republic. All expressed deep admiration for Rwanda’s achievements and the lessons they could draw for their own contexts.

Honourable Thomas Romeo Quioh, Chairperson of the Committee on Elections and Inauguration in Liberia’s House of Representatives, stated:

“Our visit to Rwanda has been truly rewarding. As nations that share painful histories, Rwanda, with the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and Liberia, with 14 years of civil war, we are inspired by how Rwanda has rebuilt itself in just 30 years. We came to learn from Rwanda’s model of progress, especially in promoting women’s inclusion in leadership, so we can apply these lessons in strengthening our own democracy back home.”

Through these exchanges, the Parliament of Rwanda reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation as a key driver of peace, gender equality, and sustainable development across the African continent and beyond.

During the visit, Members of Parliament shared insights into national policies that have prioritised gender equality within families, supported women’s participation in political life, and integrated women’s empowerment into the national budgeting process. These strategic efforts have played a vital role in transforming governance and strengthening democratic institutions.

Rwanda’s success demonstrates that empowering women is not only a matter of fairness but also a foundation for sustainable development. Delegates also examined Rwanda’s broader national transformation, including its journey of reconciliation and unity following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The country’s ongoing commitment to justice, healing, and social cohesion continues to serve as a powerful example of how national trust can be rebuilt.
