A Rwandan delegation, led by Hon. Solina Nyirahabimana, Vice President of the Senate, attended the 151st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 19 to 23. The Assembly brought together parliamentarians from around the world to advance dialogue and cooperation on humanitarian norms, democracy, and peace.
During the General Debate, held under the theme "Upholding humanitarian norms and supporting humanitarian action in times of crisis", Hon. Nyirahabimana delivered a statement highlighting Rwanda’s experience and commitment to the protection of human life and dignity.
She recalled that Rwanda endured the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, during which over one million lives were lost, emphasising that this tragic history has shaped Rwanda’s strong advocacy for upholding humanitarian norms and protecting human life, especially in times of crisis.
On the sidelines of the Assembly, Hon. Nyirahabimana met with Hon. Milton Dick, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Australia. The discussion focused on Rwanda's journey in advancing gender equality and explored ways to strengthen relations between the two parliaments.
