On 14 April 2026, the Plenary Sitting of the Senate approved the appointment of three senior officials to key national institutions, following a comprehensive review of their qualifications and professional experience.

The approved officials are Mr. Nkiko Albert, appointed as Commissioner in the National Electoral Commission; Ms. Mbabazi Judith, appointed as Deputy Ombudsman in charge of preventing and combating injustice; and Mr. Niwenshuti Richard, appointed as Director General of the Rwanda Cooperation Initiative.

Before the approval, the Senate examined reports submitted by its Standing Committees, including the Committee on Foreign Affairs, National Unity and Security, and the Committee on Political Affairs and Human Rights. These committees conducted a thorough assessment of the nominees’ dossiers and confirmed that each candidate meets the required standards of competence, integrity, and experience.

The Senate’s decision underscores its constitutional responsibility to ensure that leadership positions in key public institutions are entrusted to qualified and capable individuals, in the interest of effective governance and public service delivery.
