On 06 February 2023, the Plenary Sitting of the Senate called for the Government to establish a way of fast-tracking primary (P6) and general secondary school (S6) children who have left schools and bring them back. Senate also recommended monitoring the education of children from families living with conflicts so that those family conflicts may not affect their education.
The recommendations were made on 6 February 2023 by the Plenary Sitting of the Senate during the adoption of the Standing Committee on Social Affairs and Human Rights report on the government’s actions to prevent school dropout in 12-year basic education.
The Standing Committee on Social Affairs and Human Rights find out that some of the main reasons for children's dropout rising rate in schools include but not limited to family conflicts, poverty, and a poor mindset.
The committee’s report found that the figures of the Ministry of Education illustrated that in primary schools, the children's dropout rate is 9.5% in 2020/2021 from 7.8% in 2019. The figures indicate that in primary school, many cases of dropouts are for young boys at a rate of 11.3%, while girls dominate in secondary school at 11.1%.
During the Committee’s activity, from 24 January to 08 February 2023, Senators toured 21 districts in all provinces and the City of Kigali, where they visited schools with 12 Years of Basic Education, and technical and vocational education. They also interacted with local-level leaders, teachers, and students.
