The Senate convened a consultative meeting on 12 June 2026, bringing together Senators, representatives of public and private institutions, agricultural experts and farmers to discuss how technology can accelerate agricultural transformation in Rwanda.

The forum examined the role of technology in increasing agricultural productivity, strengthening climate resilience, improving market access, and modernizing farming practices. Discussions also focused on access to digital infrastructure, the involvement of youth in smart agriculture, capacity building for farmers and extension officers, and challenges affecting technology adoption in the sector.

Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting, the President of the Senate, Rt Hon. Kalinda François Xavier, noted that technology-driven agriculture offers a sustainable pathway to increasing food production, supporting agro-processing industries, creating jobs for young people, and expanding market opportunities that contribute to national economic growth.

Following the discussions, the Senate committed to working closely with relevant institutions to address identified challenges and promote wider adoption of technology in agriculture. Key areas of follow-up include strengthening coordination among institutions to make digital infrastructure more accessible and affordable, enhancing the capacity of stakeholders engaged in modern agriculture, increasing investment in agricultural research and innovation, and facilitating farmers’ access to affordable financing and consolidated agricultural land, particularly for youth.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of technology as a catalyst for agricultural transformation and highlighted the shared commitment of stakeholders to building a modern, productive, and resilient agricultural sector that contributes to Rwanda’s socio-economic development.
