The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Security is conducting an oversight mission from 3–17 March 2026 to evaluate measures aimed at preventing wildlife from leaving protected areas and damaging crops or property in surrounding communities.

The visits focus on districts near Akagera National Park, Nyungwe National Park, Volcanoes National Park, and Gishwati-Mukura National Park.

Senators are engaging affected residents, inspecting damaged areas, and reviewing how compensation mechanisms operate. They will also meet officials from the Special Guarantee Fund and the Rwanda Development Board to assess the effectiveness of conservation and compensation measures.

The Committee aims to propose sustainable solutions that protect citizens’ livelihoods while safeguarding Rwanda’s natural heritage and tourism sector.
