Members of the Senate Committee on Political Affairs and Governance have commenced field visits to nine districts from 10 to 18 February 2026 as part of an oversight exercise aimed at assessing activities undertaken to improve legal aid services across the country.
The visits are intended to evaluate ongoing efforts to enhance access to justice and ensure that all Rwandans can effectively exercise their right to fair and equitable justice. Through this initiative, Senators are engaging with local authorities, legal aid providers, and citizens to assess the delivery, accessibility, and impact of legal aid services at the district level.
Legal aid services are designed to support citizens in understanding and protecting their rights. These services include the provision of legal advice, as well as representing or assisting citizens in courts of law, particularly those who lack the financial means to secure legal representation.
The oversight activity seeks to identify achievements, challenges, and areas requiring improvement in the provision of legal aid services. The Committee aims to ensure that these services are accessible, effective, and responsive to the needs of citizens, especially vulnerable groups.
In addition to the field visits, the Committee will also hold consultations with relevant institutions at the national level that have legal aid services within their mandate, in order to comprehensively assess the coordination and effectiveness of these services nationwide.
