On January 29, 2024, the President of the Senate, Right Honorable Kalinda Francois Xavier, along with Vice Presidents Mrs Nyirasafari Esperance and Mrs Mukabaramba Alvera, welcomed the esteemed Women's Caucus of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament of Somalia. This visit marks a crucial step in fostering international collaboration and addressing pressing issues concerning women's rights and gender equality in Somalia.
Chairperson of women's Caucus of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament of Somalia in the Upper House of the Federal Parliament of Somalia and head of delegation, Senator Zamzam Ibrahim Ali said, “We are here to learn from Rwanda's journey towards gender equality because Rwanda is the mirror in empowering women.”
Rwanda, known for its remarkable strides in women's empowerment, has achieved one of the highest percentages of female representation in the world.
President of the Senate Kalinda François Xavier expressed his optimism about the positive impact this exchange could have on the status of women in both parliaments. He highlighted the importance of empowering women in the pursuit of gender equality and affirmed Rwanda's commitment to supporting Somalia in their endeavors.
From 29 January to 3 February, Delegates from Somalia will tour different government institutions, to witness how Rwanda creates environments where women actively contribute to shaping policies and driving socio-economic progress through civic education programs, and legislative reforms.
