On 13 April 2026, the President of the Senate, Kalinda François Xavier, joined national leaders and citizens at the Rebero Genocide Memorial to mark the conclusion of the official commemoration week of Kwibuka 32.
The event also served as a solemn moment to honour politicians who were killed for opposing the plan of the Genocide against the Tutsi, a powerful reminder of courage in the face of injustice.
In his remarks, Senate President Kalinda François Xavier emphasised that remembering these leaders is not only a tribute to their bravery but also a critical lesson for nation-building. He highlighted the importance of fostering unity and strengthening good governance as foundations for a resilient Rwanda.
He further stressed that understanding the role played by politicians in the planning and execution of the Genocide against the Tutsi is essential in establishing the truth. According to him, this understanding reinforces the fact that the genocide was systematically planned and serves as a vital tool in combating denial and minimisation, while contributing to efforts aimed at preventing such atrocities in Rwanda and beyond.
“The fight against genocide ideology will not stop as long as it has not been completely uprooted,” he noted, calling for collective responsibility. He underscored that sustained commitment and unity among Rwandans remain key to safeguarding the country’s progress and ensuring that genocide never happens again.
