The Senate organized a consultative meeting on May 31, 2024 through the Committee on Social Affairs and Human Rights to discuss the preservation of Rwandan culture and the education of the youth. The meeting brought together Senators, as well as representatives from the public and private sectors responsible for culture. The main focus of the meeting was to deliberate on Rwandan cultural values and taboos, the promotion of the Kinyarwanda language, and the collaboration between institutions to promote all cultural aspects, with a particular emphasis on engaging the youth.
Dr. Kalinda François Xavier, the President of the Senate, emphasized that the meeting provides an opportunity for cultural institutions to collaborate on preserving Rwandan culture and educating the youth about it. He stressed the importance of aligning educational practices with early childhood development to promote Rwandan cultural values.
Senate President Kalinda reiterated the Senate's commitment to reviewing the ideas presented and to continue engaging with relevant institutions to ensure the preservation of Rwandan cultural legacy for future generations, both within Rwanda and in the Rwandan diaspora.
During the meeting, key speakers such as Ambassador Masozera Robert, Director General of the Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy; Parfait Busabizwa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Arts; and Dr Mbarushimana Nelson, Director General of the Rwanda Basic Education Board, delivered presentations on efforts put in place to preserve Rwandan culture and to educate the youth the culture. The presentations were followed by open discussions among the participants."
