On November 13th, 2023, Senators of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Security started the oversight activities on how the Rwandan Government is implementing the United Nations Climate Change agreement, signed on June 5th,1992 at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
During the meeting with Minister of Environment Dr. Mujawamariya Jeanne D’Arc, she presented some measures taken by the Government that show its dedication to environmental protection.
Some of them highlighted by the Minister are the reform of the laws related to environmental protection, the establishment of Funds to support different projects designed for environmental protection and climate change, ambitious goal of reducing polluted gas emissions by 38% by 2030 among others.
The Standing Committee also will hold discussions with different institutions that have environmental protection in their responsibilities to protect the environment like Rwanda Environment Management Authority, Rwanda Forest Authority, and Rwanda Meteorological Agency to know what is being done to comply with the principles of the UN agreement on Climate Change.
Senators of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, cooperation and Security also plan to make on-the-ground trips to the districts and visit industrial zones, companies, and Hotels, to assess how they implement the principles of the United Nations Agreement on Climate Change.
