On November 30, 2024, all Senators joined the citizens of the five districts of the Northern province in Community Work activities known as Umuganda. The activity aimed to further bring Senators closer to the community. Five teams of Senators carried out activities across Musanze, Gakenke, Rulindo, Burera, and Gicumbi districts of Northern Province.
In Burera District, Senators and residents focused on clearing water channels in the Kamiranzovu marshland in Butaro Sector. Meanwhile, in Gakenke District, they built terraces on Rwesero Hill, which will help protect the soil and conserve the Nyabarongo River.
Senators planted fruit-bearing and agroforestry trees in Runyinya village, Kaniga Sector in Gicumbi District. This village is home to 60 families relocated from high-risk areas.
Rulindo residents and the Senators helped residents of Cyinzuzi Sector dig anti-erosion trenches in a forest in Rudogo Cell while Senators led by the President of the Senate team planted trees along a 10-kilometer road in Gacaca Sector, Musanze District.
During the community meeting after the community work, Senators urged residents to promote unity, fight against genocide ideology, prioritize hygiene, and address issues like stunting and domestic conflicts.
The President of the Senate, Right Honorable Kalinda François Xavier stressed, “We must prevent and fight against genocide ideology wherever it arises. The discrimination has no place in our country. A divided nation cannot achieve any progress.”
The community work ended with an interactive session where residents asked questions and shared ideas about development and well-being with Senators.
