On 20 April 2025, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Hon. Kazarwa Gertrude, joined Rwandans in Gishamvu Sector in Huye District for the 31st commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
In her remarks, Speaker Kazarwa comforted survivors from Gishamvu and surrounding sectors, commending their strength and resilience. “Your powerful testimony is the foundation that continues to remind the world—and ourselves—that genocide must never happen again, anywhere,” she said.
With many victims’ remains still being discovered, the Speaker called on the public to share any information that could help ensure all victims receive a dignified burial. During the ceremony, 623 newly recovered remains were laid to rest at the Nyumba Genocide Memorial, joining the 60,384 already buried there.
Speaker Kazarwa emphasised Parliament’s ongoing commitment to supporting genocide survivors and promoting national unity. “The Parliament stands with Rwandans in the effort to build a strong and united nation, through laws and strategies that prevent genocide and its ideology, and by supporting all programs that care for genocide survivors,” she said.
Alongside other leaders, Speaker Kazarwa laid wreaths in honour of the victims. During the Genocide, an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 Tutsi who had sought refuge in Gishamvu were brutally killed.
