On 03 June 2023, Rt. Hon. Mukabalisa Donatille, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Government officials and families joined the residents of Rusizi District in the 29th Commemoration of Genocide against the Tutsi at Mibilizi Genocide Memorial, where they laid wreaths at the resting place of bodies, including 1240 bodies recently discovered at the surroundings of Mibilizi Parish.
Speaker Mukabalisa comforted Genocide survivors, stating “After all the tragedies that we were told occurred in this place, and after 29 years, it is regrettable that we discovered more than 1200 bodies in the same place, where people live, walk and do their everyday activities including farming.”
"We are always asking those who were involved in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi to unveil information about where those who were killed were thrown so that they can be given a dignified burial. Until now it is difficult to understand why they continue to be resistant, despite the generosity shown to them, through the country’s uniqueness and kindness," added Speaker Mukabalisa Donatille.
At the Mibilizi Parish, during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, a major attack was launched, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people and they are buried at a memorial site constructed outside the church, including those 1240 exhumed after 29 years. The victims were from Gashonga, Nzahaha, Rwimbogo, Nyakarenzo and Nkungu areas.
