On December 5, 2024, during a Plenary Sitting convened in extraordinary session, the Senate confirmed Mukantaganzwa Domitilla as the President of the Supreme Court and Hitiyaremye Alphonse as the Vice President of the Supreme Court.

The Senate’s Committee on Political Affairs and Governance reviewed the qualifications of both leaders and conducted virtual interactions with them to evaluate their knowledge, skills, and experience necessary for fulfilling their roles effectively.

Dr. Usta Kaitesi, the chairperson of the Committee on Political Affairs and Governance, stated that their analysis indicated both leaders possess extensive experience to lead the justice sector in Rwanda.

Article 86 of the Constitution of Rwanda outlines the Senate’s powers to appoint various officials, including the judges of the Supreme Court.
