On January 7, 2025, Dr. Gasore Jimmy, the Minister of Infrastructure (Mininfra),explained in the plenary sitting the government's decision not to give operating permits to petrol-powered taxi motorcycles.This move is part of the government’s efforts to reduce air pollution.

Tabling the topical question,Honorable Nkuranga Egide expressed concerns about the impact of this decision. He is worried it might disrupt transportation for people and goods, hurt the livelihoods of people who depend on motorcycles for work, and create additional challenges for their families.

Minister Gasore explained that the decision was meant to cause minimal disruption. He said, “This decision only applies to new motorcycles, those imported, or those being sold or transferred seeking to enter the transport as a profession” He added, “Current motorcycle operators can continue working as usual and will get permits as long as their motorcycles are still in use.”

Minister Gasore also addressed concerns about the resources available to support the switch to electric motorcycles. He reassured that efforts are in place to help with the change. “We are increasing investments in electric motorcycles and the necessary equipment. We’re also improving the infrastructure for charging the motorcycles by expanding the power supply,” he said.

The government’s plan balances environmental goals with the economic needs of people who depend on motorcycles for their income.
